Minutes of the Autumn meeting at the Foyer on 12th September 2006

Apologies: Colin Granger, Geoff Ellis, Andrew Bird, David Hall, PCSO Swann and Ed Birch.

Sharon Thomas thanked those present and we welcomed two new members – Ronda and Carmen both from Nola. Sharon then asked Peter Stocker to begin the reports.

Correspondence

  • Greenleaf magazine – The green party paper
  • Environwise magazine – news on recycling and energy saving for businesses.
  • B & H council media reports about North Laine.
  • Brighton Station planning application – A new access route and lift is proposed for Trafalgar Street. Peter discussed the plans and those present asked the secretary to write to the council in favour of the application.

Meetings attended
  • One planet living – Station site proposal. Peter met with Mike Butler and Pooran Desai and discussed their planning proposal. Although the plans do not conform completely to the site brief Peter believes that they would be a very sustainable option and complement the site.
  • Shopping and Eating guide 2007 – Julian had sent a proof of the proposed NLTA double space Ad which was circulated to those present. We will receive the Ad and “straplines” for the website at the bottom of the relevant pages in the guide.

Treasurer’s report
David Hall had prepared a report which Peter read out. We currently have 124 members and approximately £7000 in the account. There are liabilities of roughly £3000 to cover website design and launch and printing costs.

BID Report
Andrew Fisher, a North Laine member of the BID board discussed the selection process that had led Blachere being awarded the Christmas Lights contract and showed artists impressions of the proposed lights. He then talked about the Priory partnership being chosen to represent the BID area for PR. The boards next task will be to appoint Security professionals as asked for by the BID questionnaire.

During questions from the floor both Andrew and Peter stressed that the BID board and the NLTA will work closely together for the benefit of North Laine.

Southern Water
Works are ongoing and the next liaison meeting will be on 29th September. After discussion no work will take place in North Street before or over Christmas.

Police report
PCSO Swann had sent apologies on behalf of Sussex Police so there was no report.

Business Crime Reduction Report
Lisa Perretta, the Brighton Crime Reduction Partnership manager gave a report on ways that smaller shops in North Laine can get involved with the BCRP and benefit from their support. She talked about exclusion orders and photos of offenders which are available to BCRP members. Brochures with information on how to join and costs were given out to those present. (Peter has details or Lisa can be contacted on 733393).

Brighton & Hove Walking and Cycling strategy
Dean Spears, principal transport planner and Abby Hone, walking and cycling officer talked about more cycle parking spaces and some traders suggested using a loading bay in each street. We discussed rogue cyclists and problems with cycling on pavements. Abby talked about the £3 million awarded to the city for cycling issues and said there would be more consultation about cycling shortly.

NLTA website and launch
Brian Pedley, our website designer told us that the website was coming on well and would be ready for its official launch on the 5th of October at the Jubilee library. (Some of the traders information will be added after the launch to make sure that the main pages are complete). Brian took questions from those present and explained that traders could make small changes when needed. Sharon distributed a proof of the website flyer which was well received. Peter and Sharon will proceed with the printing of the flyers and the invites for the launch.

      A.O.B.
  • Steve Pybus asked us to contact the council about conflict problems with the south end of Sydney Street between cars and pedestrians during closures. Bollards may also be needed to stop cars reversing into loading bays in the closed section of the street. Donna Rix Martin also asked for a bollard at the Church Street end of Gardner Street – same problem.
  • Containerised Waste. – many traders had received letters stating that they will be fined if their trade waste is not contained. Pat Mernagh reminded those present that at a meeting with Jan Jonkers, ( Cityclean ) in April it was stated that sealed cardboard boxes with your shop name and address and waste collector on was OK. Peter reminded traders that a good old fashioned dustbin worked well – it still needs the name of the shop and collector on!

The meeting ended at 7.25 when Sharon and Peter thanked those present for attending.
