| Christmas is coming!
Writing this newsletter at the beginning of December it is hard to believe that we are so close to Christmas when there seems to be so little interest from many of our customers to purchase goods. A disturbing report on the Business Forum website states that individual debt has risen by a massive 10% in the last year, (details in News in brief inside), so this is the year when we really do need to put on a good show and work together to show customers why we think North Laine is the place to shop! Southern Water gave us a good place to start by donating Christmas trees to Sydney Street as a thank you for putting up with the water mains disruption. The trees look great as you can see by the picture of Pen to Paper’s tree and other shops could follow suit by buying trees and popping them outside during the day. Gresham Blake, the tailors in Bond Street have put up a fantastic lighting display outside the shop. The BID lights were switched on with a firework display extravaganza on the 15th November and the NLTA are asking all North Laine shops to put up white Christmas lights where possible. Last year we had many good reviews from our customers and created a really festive atmosphere. Let’s try again this year to make the North Laine “shine out” at Christmas! |

Proposed Trafalgar Street Post office closure. Many traders in North Laine will be aware by now of the Post offices decision to close Trafalgar Street sub Post office at the end of February 2008. This office is a very busy and essential part of North Laine and is vital to many local offices and retailers. The NLTA believe closing this sub Post office will have a detrimental effect on the whole area and we urge traders who use the office to write and oppose the closure. The consultation period runs until the 24th of December so please write or e-mail before this. Letters should be sent to; Gary Herbert, Network Development Manager, Post Office Ltd. C/o National Consultation Team FREEPOST Consultation Team. You can send an e-mail to; consultation@postoffice.co.uk The nearest Post office to the north end of North Laine is at the Co-op and is on a yearly lease so could close with very little notice. Many traders from the south end of North Laine have reported on horrendous queues and 30 minute waits at the new Post office in Smiths at Churchill square. If you want to keep this Post office please make your views known now before it’s too late! Post office Ltd are proposing to close 5 sub offices around Brighton in the next few months - if we do not fight the Trafalgar street closure now we may only have Churchill square to use soon! Write today. |

Bond Street shop wins prestigious award. Congratulations to NLTA members Bagelman who has beaten 36 Sussex companies to the prestigious title of Best Small Sussex Business 2007/2008. Julian, owner of the bakery said “We’ve come such a long way from the ‘basket over the shoulder’ days”, well done Julian - you certainly have! |

Could you be our new street reps? The North Laine traders association are looking for street reps in North Road, Gloucester Road and Kensington Gardens. The work essentially is to direct members with queries or problems to the committee and deliver newsletters every couple of months to your road. There’s no pay unfortunately but you will get to know your neighbours and help to make decisions that affect North Laine and its retailers. Contact Peter on 601641. |
