Sharon Thomas and Guest Speaker Jonathan LoveOn the windy wet evening of Tuesday 11th March over thirty traders and guests braved the elements to attend the 2008 AGM of the North Laine Traders Association at Komedia. The evening started off at 6.10 by Chair, Sharon Thomas welcoming everyone and Peter Stocker giving the secretary's yearly review. Soozie Campbell then gave a report on the BID including Christmas lights, Unique Brighton website, various promotions. We then held elections of officers and Sharon Thomas was again elected as Chair, David Hall as treasurer and as Peter Stocker is moving premises and unable to stand as secretary those present voted to retain Peter as a paid co-ordinator for six months. The street reps were elected as shown in issue 86 of the NLTA newsletter.

The treasurer David Hall then presented the 2007 treasurer's report plus accounts and discussed membership levels and expenditure so far this year. There then followed a report on the North Laine website which has recorded over 276,000 individual hits since its launch. Quarterly results show strong growth, quarter 1. 2007 = 24,300 hits and quarter 1. 2008 over 56,000 hits. Brian Pedley was thanked for all his hard and very effective work.

Any other business included the NLTA adopting Jubilee Street, City in Bloom and questions asking for maps/signs around North Laine. Then guest speaker Jonathan Love from Business Link talked and answered small business related questions until the meeting finished at 7.30.

News 13/11/07 100% North Laine Bags in the News!

After the successful launch of the 100% North Laine Bag on Tuesday, Brighton and Hove city council voted on Thursday to ban plastic bags in the city in the next three years. Councillor Amy Kennedy said “We are calling on all retailers in the city to follow the example of those who offer reusable bags to their customers, such as the North Laine Traders Association which recently launched a sustainable bag”.

NLTA secretary Peter Stocker was interviewed by BBC South East Today on Friday and explained that many traders in the association feel that it is now unacceptable to keep giving out plastic carrier bags to our customers and that we should be asking them to reuse bags. It has been estimated that one sustainable bag such as ours saves up to 1000 plastic bags in its lifetime!

Invitation to our members
NLTA Summer Meeting at 6pm at the Regent Street Bar of Komedia on the 10th of July (Tuesday)

Agenda will include - NL Sustainable bags ( now ordered ) Pedestrian closures and the Pride evening event in Gardner St
as well as general info about events and meetings around NL.
On Wednesday 6th June the committee of the North Laine Traders Association in central Brighton selected a fair-trade organic cotton bag supplier, Supreme Creations, and chose a design for our sustainable bags. The bag project was first suggested by members in 2006 and local trader and NLTA committee member, Eddie Start has worked to source ethical suppliers and has produced articles for our newsletters.

Our aim is to make our customers realise that you cannot continue to receive plastic bags each time you purchase items - British shoppers annually use 20 billion bags - that's 350 per person, which eventually end up in landfill sites. The NLTA is not banning plastic bags - we are simply trying to persuade our customers to be more conscious of their actions and reuse bags.

  Website Launches October 5th 2006

The new North Laine website will be launched to members and invited media guests on Thursday 5th of October at the Jubilee library in Brighton. Brian Pedley our designer has been working hard and produced an excellent site that works well for shoppers and traders.

Most of the site will go “live” in early September and everything will be in place for the October launch date. The NLTA plan to add new features such as a traders “blog” and introduce seasonal information such as Christmas late night shopping events.
