North Laine Traders Association
Minutes of the Street Reps Meeting at Foyer, Pelham Street, Brighton on Thursday 26 October 2006 at 6pm.

Apologies: Lyn Aveyard, Colin Grainger, Brian Pedley, David Sewell.
Correspondence
  • 30/10/06 Local Draft Framework, 4-6pm : B&H Council meeting at Hove Town Hall - PS and ES to attend. Feedback will be given to council and BHEP (Economic Partnership) November meeting.
  • 05/12/06 Christmas tree light up event at Floral Clock, Palmeira Square, Hove.
  • Stanmer Nursery Art project – Peter has seen the project proposed for the Steine, spring 2007.
Meetings attended
  • 24/10/06 Priory Partnership - PS met Rochelle Humphrey from PR company representing BID area, to discuss logistics for Christmas Lights event.
  • 17/10/06 NCP – Peter, Philippa and Soozie Campbell met Sue Jackson from NCP to discuss parking charges. As Church St and Trafalgar St car parks are used to capacity, NCP would not offer reduced late night shopping parking, but agreed to half price vouchers for Trafalgar NCP for Sundays from 11am to 5pm (to be processed at the ticket machine). Aim to continue this if successful. Eddie suggested lobbying the LDF meeting to stop free parking at entrance to the town, as parking charges are effectively a tax on the shopper.
Treasurer's Report
David Hall reported that there was approximately £7,000 in the bank with some expenses to pay out - £165 + Vat for the Jubilee Library conference room hire, Colourfast bill £36 and Brian’s website update fee for last month (October) of £79.00.
Christmas Campaign
16/11/06 Christmas Lights switch on event at Clock Tower, 6 pm with Holly Willoughby, children’s TV presenter. At 6.15 pm a procession will travel down North St into Bond Street, Kensington Gardens and Sydney St, then turn around to The Lanes, via East Street. There will therefore be a series of road closures from 6-7.30 pm approx. The procession will include a princess and carriage, reindeer and elves, and also arranged is a Southern Sound Road Show and a choir, eg. Martlets, or Brighton Gospel Choir.

Action: MC to investigate bands/musicians for other late night shopping evenings and to enquire about visuals for advertising.

After some discussion it was agreed to use Latest for a Christmas advertising feature in the 28th November issue – PS to approach Latest. A Christmas leaflet to be printed in next few weeks to inform traders of events in North Laine. Julian to be asked to update the Christmas posters and a flyer for 2006, and PS will distribute the “Stars” decorations to the east/west street members. Donna and Eddie to help with deliveries. A special Christmas meeting to be arranged for the 5th December. Venue to be announced.

NLTA Website
Statistical reports from the new website were provided by Brian and circulated at the meeting. Approx. 2,000 hits a week since the launch, which was a successful event with excellent attendance (over 70) and some good media coverage. The rents section is password protected but Humberts Leisure and Flude will be working with NLTA in the near future. Brian now working on an hourly basis, and his first bill (for October) is £79 approx. Sharon suggested a NL website video, and David and Lynda recommended talking to Lighthouse who are moving into Argus Lofts. A competition is to be considered with a small prize. We have been approached by Michael of Business without Borders to see if he can help us to optimise our website. PS to liaise with Brian.
Sustainable Bags
Eddie Start showed samples of Jute bags which when printed with NL info would cost approx. £1.85 each. After discussion it was agreed to go ahead with some ideas for artwork and finalise details at the Jan/Feb 2007 meeting. Peter David and Eddie thought these would be a good alternative to environmentally unfriendly plastic bags, and good advertising for NL.
