2009 Membership - Join the Association and Reap the Benefits!
The news from many traders in North Laine was that Christmas started very late but was similar to last year. After a quiet year in 2008 for many Traders this really is the year when we need to pull together to make sure North Laine continues to be vibrant and to attract customers. Membership runs from 1st January to 31st December so you will shortly receive your membership reminder. We have kept our subscription rates the same for 2009 which represents exceptional value for money when you consider the package we have put together. Members WebPages from 2008 will remain live until the AGM – please make sure that you have joined by then to retain your members link page. Here are nine good reasons to join us in 2009!
  • A webpage and live link to your own website on the Northlaine.co.uk website. We are averaging 7,000 dedicated hits on our site per week!
  • Three members meetings a year when you get an opportunity to network with fellow traders, help make policy in North Laine and elect officers for the association.
  • Merchant services through Bank of Scotland at a much lower rate than small businesses can achieve independently. We are currently negotiating an even better package!
  • A members section of the website containing advice on rent and rate reviews, planning guidance and a guide explaining legal terms and fire assessment requirements.
  • Advice on rents and accountancy for small businesses and basic advice for new traders.
  • Representation on many council committees and city business groups.
  • Sharing information and best practice!
  • Tourism Partnership - promoting North Laine businesses through the City Council website.
  • Working together - last year our members worked together, supported each other and in many cases traded goods and services at a discount between themselves.

North Laine Traders Video Competition – It’s a draw!
We have a tie for first place in the video competition with Stella Lennon and Pirate Media TV both sharing the £250 prize money. Third prize goes to Henry Scriven who gets a dinner for two voucher for Nia Cafe.

The North Laine Traders Association launched a "youtube style" video competition with the aim of capturing the vibrancy of the North Laine area in a two-minute video for our website. The video clip gives potential new visitors to the area a taste of the unique atmosphere they can enjoy whilst shopping and eating in North Laine.

The NLTA will be revamping the successful website shortly to include new features that members have asked for and ensuring that it continues to be the site visitors go to first when enquiring about North Laine.

NLTA/Bank of Scotland
Merchant services members deal
During December and January Sharon Thomas and Peter Stocker have been renegotiating our deal with Bank of Scotland to see if we can achieve better savings for our members. By the time of the AGM we should be able to announce the new deal.
Council’s Be local - Buy local campaign
The NLTA helped launch Brighton and Hove council’s buy local campaign in December. For more details of this initiative and other measures that the council have instigated visit their website at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk
Can you claim small business rates relief?
Remember to apply for small business rates relief if you have a rateable value of £10,000 or less. Businesses with a valuation of less than £5,000 may be able to claim up to 50% off their payable bill. For details call Brighton & Hove council on 291981.
Beware – more forged £20 notes!
Please check all your bank notes carefully as more forged notes are starting to appear in the south east. The problem seems to be mainly £20 but can be other notes as well. Always take a few seconds to check notes and ask your staff to do the same.
