The North Laine Traders Association would like to thank all our members both past and present for supporting us and enabling us to maximise the business potential of North Laine. Many who were here in 1989 will remember that we formed our association when the council produced tourist maps of Brighton that had “Map of Brighton” blocking out most of North Laine.
We began as a group of disgruntled traders who met after work in the Nelson or Eagle and eventually formed an association when Geoff Ellis and Peter Stocker decided to do something more than grumble. Support grew and with encouragement from the Community Association we soon had over 30% of North Laine shops as members. Over the years various Chairs such as Tony Mernagh and Andrew Bird have arranged discounts on merchant services and organised a rent register which still continues. We also tackle local issues and run the widely acclaimed North Laine website with Brian Pedley. The 100% North Laine bags proved to be a hit and we are now working with the council to promote North Laine and the “Buy Local” campaign.
Officers of the committee sit on many city centre boards and working groups. We are now providing information for other traders groups across the country to support their members. Join us and help us support our local traders!
NLTA Chair, Sharon Thomas said “In times such as these there is even more need for a traders association to support and encourage business in North Laine. As new businesses open and start to trade we can use our expertise and local knowledge to help them grow. Here’s to the next 20 years!" |
