Minutes of the 22nd March 2010 Meeting

Apologies: Apologies were received from Colin (Komedia), Peter (Jaba Yard), Colin (Malarkey) and Nicholas (Snooper’s Paradise) plus Peter Crowhurst from the NLCA.
Treasurer’s Report
David Hall presented the latest accounts. He told us that we currently have 78 members.
Election of Officers
The current committee were re-elected unopposed as follows:
  • Chair – Sharon Thomas
  • Joint Co-ordinators – David Sewell and Donna Rix-Martin
  • Treasurer – David Hall
  • Street Reps were elected en masse with two new additions – Melissa Drayson
from Trafalgar Street and Peter Allinson from Gardner Street
Website Update
Brian (our web designer) is currently updating the way in which statistics are gathered for visits to the website and hopefully the new system will be in place before the next meeting.
Police Update
PCSO John Sharman attended the meeting with Sergeant Dave Palmer who is newly assigned to our area. He encouraged traders to visit the police website to contact him for any advice and support which may be required in the future. He was asked about the recent burglaries which had taken place in the area with several shops having been targeted in the last few months. He said that statistically burglaries were no higher than usual and offered to provide further information on this. Some culprits had already been arrested.
NLTA Logo
We had agreed at a previous meeting to look at updating the NLTA Logo. David Sewell passed around some suggested images which a friend of his had kindly produced but it was generally felt that these departed too much from the existing logo. Members present felt that the existing compass logo should be retained and streamlined as it has a strong association with the NLTA and the North Laine in general. Huw from Junk Funk offered to look at updating it and agreed to come up with some suggested alternatives.

We also discussed using the logo on a North Laine T-shirt. Melissa said that she had a contact who might be able to help with this and agreed to investigate further.

NLTA Map
It was generally agreed that last year’s introduction of the map had been successful and as they have now all been distributed, it was agreed that another print-run should be undertaken for this year. The format will remain the same but some of the artwork may change. Huw agreed to look into this.
Other Priorities for 2010
It was felt by those present that more online communication between members would be a good idea. Although we currently have the website and a Facebook page, there is no forum for blogging or discussion about daily issues. It was agreed that a google group might be a good idea and that Brian Pedley would be asked for advice on setting this up.
Any Other Business
  • Donna mentioned that Brighton in Bloom is underway and encouraged those present to think about having hanging baskets outside their businesses. Baskets can be purchased at a cost of £57.50 plus a small charge for installation. (www.cityinbloom.com)
  • Alison from Arty Magazine gave a short presentation on this new publication which acts as a guide to all the best creative destinations in the city. (Alison@artymagazines.com).
