100% North Laine Bags in the News! - 19th October 2007 |
After the successful launch of the 100% North Laine Bag on Tuesday, Brighton and Hove city council voted on Thursday to ban plastic bags in the city in the next three years. Councillor Amy Kennedy said “We are calling on all retailers in the city to follow the example of those who offer reusable bags to their customers, such as the North Laine Traders Association which recently launched a sustainable bag”.
NLTA secretary Peter Stocker was interviewed by BBC South East Today on Friday and explained that many traders in the association feel that it is now unacceptable to keep giving out plastic carrier bags to our customers and that we should be asking them to reuse bags. It has been estimated that one sustainable bag such as ours saves up to 1000 plastic bags in its lifetime!

On Wednesday 6th June the committee of the North Laine Traders Association in central Brighton selected a fair-trade organic cotton bag supplier, Supreme Creations, and chose a design for our sustainable bags. The bag project was first suggested by members in 2006 and local trader and NLTA committee member, Eddie Start has worked to source ethical suppliers and has produced articles for our newsletters.
Our aim is to make our customers realise that you cannot continue to receive plastic bags each time you purchase items - British shoppers annually use 20 billion bags - that's 350 per person, which eventually end up in landfill sites. The NLTA is not banning plastic bags - we are simply trying to persuade our customers to be more conscious of their actions and reuse bags.
